A Day in the Life of a Learner at The Haven
At The Haven, every learner’s day is planned to support their wellbeing, communication, independence, and learning. Our calm, structured environment helps learners feel safe, valued, and ready to engage.
A Calm and Positive Start to the Day
Learners are welcomed by familiar adults who know them well. The calm arrival routine helps learners settle quickly and confidently. Visual supports and clear routines help learners understand what will happen during the day, reducing anxiety and supporting emotional wellbeing.
Staff take time to check in with each learner, ensuring they feel safe, regulated, and ready to learn. Where needed, plans are adjusted flexibly to reflect the learner’s emotional or sensory needs.
Learning That Meets Individual Needs
Learning at The Haven is personalised. Learning tasks are carefully matched to each learner’s strengths, needs, and interests, helping them to experience success and build confidence.
Teaching is delivered in small groups or one to one, using consistent approaches that support communication, engagement, and independence. Learning takes place in a range of environments, including classrooms or outdoors, depending on what best supports the learner.
Supporting Communication and Independence
Throughout the day, learners are encouraged to communicate in ways that work best for them, including the use of visuals, symbols, technology, or spoken language. Staff model and reinforce communication skills consistently, supporting learners to express choices, needs, and feelings.
Learners are supported to develop independence through everyday routines, such as organising their belongings, preparing snacks, making choices, and taking responsibility for their learning and small tasks.
Emotional Wellbeing and Regulation
Emotional wellbeing is central to daily life at The Haven. Learners are supported to recognise and manage their emotions using personalised strategies. When learners experience challenges, staff respond calmly and consistently, helping them feel safe and understood.
Breaks and transitions are carefully planned and supported, allowing learners time to regulate and maintain readiness to learn.
Positive End to the Day
At the end of the day, learners reflect on their experiences in ways appropriate to their needs. Transitions home are managed carefully and calmly, helping learners leave school feeling settled and successful.
Strong communication with parents and carers ensures that achievements, progress, and any support needs are shared regularly, reinforcing positive home–school relationships.
